Reminder – February 5, 2018 Deadline for 2018-19 Underuse Penalty Waiver for the Campus-Based Programs: In accordance with sections 413D(d)(2) and 442(d)(2) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended (HEA), if a school returns more than 10 percent of its Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) or Federal Work-Study (FWS) allocations in a given award year, the allocation for the second succeeding award year is reduced by the dollar amount returned unless the Secretary waives this provision. The deadline to request a waiver of the 2018–19 Award Year penalty of FWS and FSEOG for the underuse of 2016–17 Award Year funds is February 5, 2018. 2018-2019 Award Year Deadline Dates for Campus-Based Programs: The Secretary of Education has announced the 2018-2019 award year deadline: dates for the submission of requests and documents from postsecondary institutions for the Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Work-Study (FWS), and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) programs (collectively, the “campus-based programs”). For additional information, including list of deadlines, please review the January 3, 2018, Federal Register Notice (Volume 83, #2, pages 356-358).

2016–17 Campus-Based Awards Closeout: Closeout of all 2016–17 Campus-Based program awards has been completed based on the official reporting in the Fiscal Operations Report for 2016–17 and Application to Participate for 2018–19 (FISAP). For additional information, including important information regarding the notification process related to the awards closeout, please review the January 11, 2018 electronic announcement.

Upcoming Email Notifications to FAFSA Applicants and Parents: In early 2018, Federal Student Aid (FSA) will be emailing certain Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) applicants and parents about renewing the FAFSA form for the 2018–19 award year, using the Internal Revenue Service Data Retrieval Tool (IRS DRT), and taking advantage of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. FSA will begin sending the second round of renewal reminders to 2017–18 FAFSA filers (and parents of dependent 2017–18 FAFSA filers) who have not submitted a 2018–19 FAFSA form. Eligible students and parents who have a valid email address in the Central Processing System (CPS) will receive an email between now and early February. Updated Cybersecurity Compliance Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Posted:  Federal Student Aid’s Senior Advisor of Cybersecurity has updated the Cybersecurity Compliance Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on the Cybersecurity Compliance page. This guidance clarifies some of the data security and breach questions asked during the 2017 FSA Training Conference. The January 12, 2018 electronic announcement includes a link to the compliance page.

Health Education Assistance Loan (HEAL) – Updates to Information Page: A January 11, 2018 email was recently posted for HEAL partners on the HEALinformation page  regarding the HEAL Claims Document Upload Process. For additional information, please review the information page, which also includes recent and older electronic announcements Regarding the HEAL program.

Loan Servicing Information – Temporary Closures of Federal Loan Servicing Centers Due to Hazardous Weather Conditions: Federal loan servicers will implement contingency plans and remain open as much as possible when hazardous weather bears down on the area in which a servicer is located. However, if precautions must be taken to ensure personal and public safety during a hazardous weather event, an affected servicer may need to close a center early or completely to ensure that safety. Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program Special Allowance Rates for the Quarter Ending December 31, 2017: For the latest FFEL rate information, please review the January 10, 2018 electronic announcement.


Availability of GA DataPrep Software, Version 4.0:  An updated version of the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) Guaranty Agency (GA) DataPrep software is now available on the Federal Student Aid Download (FSAdownload) website. The GA DataPrep software is designed to assist GAs in reporting Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loans to NSLDS.
